This is David Mickelson from Mickelson Capital Consulting reporting on life settlement investment opportunities, and the distressed nature of the industry. And, why right now for investors considering entering this market, it might be an ideal time. With the advent of the credit crunch that hit last year in the life settlement business, there was an additional secondary blow, which was the lengthening of life expectancy estimates from all the major life expectancy providers. This essentially put many, many of the institutional buyers from hedge funds to institutional banks in a position of having overpaid for their policies, and they don’t have the credit capacity to keep servicing all those policies. Remember, with life settlements, the ongoing premium is something that can not be avoided, and money needs to be paid, or else the policies lapse without value. This has meant an abundance of inventory held by institutional owners, and they are all anxious to sell. So that means that any of them are selling at any cost. And that cost, being any cost, is being driven down quite low. So, careful buyers in today’s market are able to pick up existing life settlement policies of many different kinds, whether it’s financed, or purchased before contestability was over. Even traditional policies, where’s none of that controversial business going on, are all available at pennies on the dollar compared to what it was before. The issue really is sorting through it and finding a needle in a haystack where you find good policies and distressed portfolios that you can pick up for literally pennies on the dollar.
